Paul Krugman is the real Denier

The Daily Astorian published another inflammatory op-ed by Paul Krugman (Deniers Blind Themselves) on May 19 about the “deniers” of the greatest scientific hoax every perpetrated on a free society.

The partisan column deals little with the facts about Climate Change and more about attacking the ignorant rubes from the Republican Party and other assorted idiots that don’t buy it. Krugman warns Marco Rubio that his state, “will sink beneath the waves” if he doesn’t repent.

These researchers and the media types that continue to promote the idea of this fraud are more interested in the complete Socialization of the planet despite the facts disputing it rather than the actually health of Mother Gaia. That’s the dirty little secret about Climate Change they won’t include in their arguments.

Climate Change Science is nothing more than a governmental control mechanism to convert a free society into a 3rd world top down Soviet style model. There are many noted scientists and researches that challenge the findings of the climate dooms dayer’s you just won’t read about in the Astorian, the Oregonian and most certainly the New York Times.

In a published story on May 20, 2014 on the website Newsmax entitled: “Climate Change Remains Unsettled, Say 31,072 Scientists” there seems to be substantial group of “deniers” that don’t march lock step with Krugman.

The first 2 paragraphs say it all.

While the United Nations and the Obama administration assert that climate change is settled science and requires dramatic regulatory oversight, 31,072 U.S. scientists have signed the Petition Project, saying the issue remains decidedly unsettled.

“There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will in the foreseeable future cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate," the petition says. Over 9,000 of the petition's signatories have a Ph.D. in a scientific field.

Sometimes the myth has to be challenged with just one set of facts to debunk a dangerous theory.

In Sept. 2013 a National Snow and Ice Data study reported that Antarctic sea ice had grown to 19.51 million square kilometers. That number bested record high levels set earlier in the month and in 2012 (of 19.48 million square kilometers). These records date back to October 1978. A cold Arctic summer the previous year left 533,000 more square miles of ocean covered with ice than at the same time last year – an increase of 29 per cent.

Many researchers including the BBC predicted that the Antarctic would be ice free by the summer of 2013.

The photos released by NASA during that same time period calculated the size of the ice increase as large 950,000 square miles. Despite the photographic evidence of a 35 year high in sea ice in the Antarctic and the obvious cooling period the earth’s climate has been in the last several years the Church of Global Warming has still tried to spin the facts to make you believe in their scam. The facts are in, they’re the real deniers.

The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth by Leigh Montville: Book Review

The Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe RuthThe Big Bam: The Life and Times of Babe Ruth by Leigh Montville

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the mid-1990’s while on an extended vacation to New York City one of the places I made the pilgrimage to was the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. The HOF is an amazing place to be sure but the stand out moment and the memory that has stuck with to this day was when I weaved my way through the museum to Babe Ruth’s display or should I say room.

I’m a confirmed Non-Yankee Fan but the instant I walked into the room with Ruth’s memorabilia my mouth fell open in awe and goose bumps covered my entire body. The room by its self is very impressive, the single room that is devoted to him is larger than any of the others for any other player in the HOF and deservedly so.

You quickly begin to see why when you begin to look at the amazing statistics he piled up in his 22 year Major League career. Most people know about his home run records but few know the whole story statistically about Ruth.

You take one look at the photos, the uniforms, the video’s, the testimonials, the newspaper clippings and of course his records and you begin to see why he was called the greatest athlete in the history of  baseball and some would say of any sport.

That day I acquired a new found respect for him. No other player in the history of baseball will ever reach the level of complete domination that he accomplished. He owned baseball like Henry Ford owned Ford Motor Company except Ruth owned General Motors and all the other car companies combined.

This book gives you all the facts that are known of his life from beginning to end. Once he became the King of Baseball all of the excesses in his personal life made some people hold him in contempt. Most forgive him for those indiscretions though because he was just a happy go lucky likable man child that could accomplish unheard of feats on a baseball diamond.

I came away with several thoughts after finishing the book. One was had Ruth had the good sense to take better care of himself physically he would have set records that would have never ever been broken. The other is I’m an even bigger fan and admirer of him now than I was 20 years ago.

The Link of Eternal Brotherhood

Lenny and me, Wyoming Cowboys first and last.
I was fortunate enough to have a very good friend from Wyoming visit me this weekend in Astoria. I’ve known Lenny Martin since 1986 which was when I first joined the Worland Wyoming Jaycees. One of the gifts I’m most grateful for in this life has been the many outstanding individuals I’ve met in the United States Junior Chamber of Commerce during my tenure in the organization from 1986 until 2001.

I’ve made friends all over the great State of Wyoming and the U.S. but there are only a handful of friends that I can call very close and intimate. Lenny would be at the top of that male list.

In 1991 when I moved to Laramie, WY to take a Manager’s job for a trucking company our relationship as friends quickly bonded into a lifelong one that has been and will continue to be one of the best and most important in my life.

Lenny and Jeff 1993

Lenny and I have similar life experiences not only from our humble and sometimes very difficult childhood but also into early adulthood and middle age. Both of us early in our lives were rough around the edges but in time with the polish of age, experience and self improvement the shine would rise to the top. The personal relationship between us and the success and failures we’ve shared together have forever linked us to eternal brotherhood.

Lenny IS Wyoming. He was chiseled out of the hardest stone of the Rocky Mountains. He’s an excellent example of the rugged bootstraps individualism and conservatism that is the staple of many of great people from Wyoming. He formed his own real estate company in Laramie and has a B.S. from the University of Wyoming. His success in the real estate business help support the 3 children he raised. Lenny has many great attributes but his role as an involved and dedicated Father has to be his own best personal achievement in life. 2 of his kids have college degrees and one of his sons serves in U.S. Naval submarine fleet.

This isn’t to say Lenny is perfect none of us are but he’s spent a lifetime striving for personal improvement and knowledge. Lenny isn’t just book smart and educated; he has the better quality of a strong foothold in good sound common sense and plain hard work. Lenny has been a great listener and supportive in the best and worse times of my life. Although the years and miles may have separated us in the flesh it never has in the spirit.

Lenny is one of those dear friends that you could not hear from for a year but as soon as the phone call or the personal visit began it’s like you had never been apart.

When I stand next to Lenny I want to believe that in many respects I’m looking into a mirror. With very few exceptions we’re identical. We’ve had similar upbringing and adult life experiences; we’re non-apologetic Christians and Conservatives, hard working, honest and intelligent. But perhaps the best part is the belief that a loyal and solid friendship through thick and thin is the most important virtue outside of thy self.

Thanks for going out of your way just to come and see me Lenny. I can’t begin to thank you enough for what your friendship has meant to me. Until we meet or talk again I’ll always love ya Man!

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard: Book Review

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a PresidentDestiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great book if you love history. Garfield was a very interesting bootstraps man and would have been an amazing President if he hadn't been gunned down by an insane lunatic early in his Presidency.

His medical care after the shooting is what led to his death. Had the American Doctors in his care used John Lister's method of antiseptic surgery the terrible infection Garfield suffered from may have been avoided and he may have survived.

For 79 agonizing days Garfield hung onto life and until he succumbed to a tragic and painful death.

I didn't know much about Garfield prior to this book. It's a shame his life was cut short because he was one the best of what America could offer in those times. I highly recommend this book, it's a fascinating story.

The Natural by Bernard Malamud: Book Review

The Natural: A NovelThe Natural: A Novel by Bernard Malamud

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

90% percent of the time the book is always superior to the movie. Not in this case. The screenplay is a better story than the book will ever be. Hollywood loves a happy ending and in the movie version they give us that. The Hero in his final at bat gives his team a National league Pennant with a lights out home run and all ends well.

In the book Roy Hobbs is not a humble guy, nor a real hero to be admired, in fact the opposite. In real life we see men fail more times than they succeed on and off the field in professional sports today.

Personally I don’t like a story that always ends with rainbows, puppy dogs and happily ever after but in this case since I love the movie so much I wish now I hadn’t picked up the book.

The Hobbs from the movie was a much more likable guy and one you could sympathize with and root for but not in the book.

My image of Roy Hobbs is now forever tainted and he falls into the category of the ordinary instead of the extraordinary. Hobbs story is one we read about almost daily and dismiss as just another dumb jock that only cares about his self interest instead of the team and the game. Skip the book watch the movie.

The Reader by Bernhard Schlink: Book Review

The ReaderThe Reader by Bernhard Schlink

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Sad and tragic love story to be sure. It’s a good example how some never can forget pass hurts or past loves. The ending of the book did make me shed a tear. The words unspoken can haunt a person for the rest of their lives.
